The Ultimate Washing Machine

A true tale of repair and redemption.

Several weeks ago, our washing machine would not agitate. It would fill, drain, and spin, but it would not do anything in between. Remembering how we had repaired a washing machine when we were younger, my husband went to the garage and returned with every tool known to man. Without sharing the painful details, let’s just say that our assessment of the situation was incorrect. As my husband said, “I think this is above our pay grade!”

On Monday we called Ray-the-appliance-guy. We told him our sad story and he came to take a look. “You need a new motor,” he said with authority. “How much?” my husband asked. “$151.23, including labor.” was the reply. The next day, Ray-the-appliance-guy replaced the motor but the machine still would not work. “Bad motor.” he said. He took out the new motor, left the old one on the floor of the laundry room, and went on his way. That was the last we saw of Ray. He came. He saw. But he did not conquer.

By Saturday we guessed that he would not be returning or answering our numerous telephone calls, so we moved on to Plan B. We reasoned that if we called another repairman, we would have to pay him to install the old motor so that he could listen to the machine and decide what was wrong with it. We saw more dollar signs. Shortly thereafter, our local home improvement store delivered our new washer.

So what is the point of this sad tale? Integrity.

Integrity: uprightness of character; an unimpaired state; completeness.

When circumstances become challenging, it is in mankind’s unredeemed nature to walk away from obligations and commitments. Without God, we are all void of integrity, we are incomplete - men and woman in an impaired state. But with God, even though we stumble, we are convinced to do right and to forge ahead. With God, marriages are mended, friendships are restored, and forgiveness flows. With God, we are washed of our sins, agitated to do better, rinsed from the world’s demands, and spun into His likeness.

Begin your day by letting God agitate you, for He is … the ultimate washing machine.
